More about FDEs

04/05

Why now

Companies already know they should use AI.
What's missing is people who make it work on the ground.

They don't know where to start. People who understand the technology don't know the business, and people who know the business don't understand the technology. No one has been standing in between. The FDE is that person. The role was born at Palantir and spread by OpenAI and Anthropic. In Japan, few people fill this role yet.

99.7% of companies in Japan are small and medium-sized businesses. The less a company can afford a dedicated AI engineer, the more an FDE working inside its operations can help.

Source: Small and Medium Enterprise Agency (a Japanese government agency), “Number of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Micro Businesses (as of June 2021): Tabulated Results” (published December 13, 2023). Small and medium-sized businesses: 3.365 million; all companies: 3.375 million.
